5 Tips for Speed Networking

Interview >

You’ve heard of the round-robin system that places two people in front of each other to determine the possibility of a love match. Now, speed dating is evolving into an option for employers that want an effective way to meet several candidates in one setting.

“It’s a highly effective event that combines head hunting, speed networking, a job fair and a concierge service,” says Gail Tolstoi-Miller, founder of Consultnetworx, a recruiting firm based in Livingston, N.J. One of their services is known as SpeedHire, and it matches pre-qualified candidates with recruiters for scheduled six-minute interviews.

Speed networking and speed hiring have actually been around for several years.  But because hiring managers are more inundated with applications, Tolstoi-Miller says these events are growing in popularity as they allow for mini interviews and a chance to determine whom they might want to pursue.

One advantage to jobseekers is that the events offer a chance to bypass resume screening software and meet face-to-face with potential employers. They are typically still only scheduled for interviews with companies that have jobs that fit their skills and experience.

Unlike job fairs, Tolstoi-Miller says speed events offer applicants more structure. “It’s not a numbers game. It's about targeting the right people and bringing in quality candidates. It’s not about wasting their time,” she says.

But you must be prepared, she notes, and it starts with a polished elevator speech. “It’s the most effective way to connect when faced with a limited amount of time, and it’s certainly required to maximize impact and memorability.”

Practice your speech and ensure that it conveys how you benefit others and what problems you can solve. Aim for simplicity. Your pitch should have a universal appeal and resonate equally with people of all ages and educational backgrounds.

You must be concise in your introduction. Talking too long may damage first impressions. Tolstoi-Miller says it’s often introverts who do well at speed hiring events because they are more conscientious about how they speak.

Other tips:

  1. Share enough with the recruiters so that they want to ask you for a follow-up to the conversation. Don’t try to tell them everything at once.
  2. End your introduction with questions: How can I help you? How can we help one another be more successful?
  3. Sound enthusiastic and passionate, no matter how tired you are.
  4. Create takeaways that could include a brochure or resume.
  5. Take a pen, notebook and appointment calendar
